Blurry symbol v wysiwyg?

Post by evildmguy » Sun May 30, 2021 3:40 pm

Okay, not sure why I am seeing this.

I'm making a map and when I place a village symbol I have, it goes blurry. Why does that happen?
Blurry v clear symbol.png
Blurry v clear symbol.png (65.1 KiB) Viewed 4740 times
The blurry ones are placed, the non blurry one is the symbol as I move it around.

So, the map size is: 4000 px x 3800 px. 10 mi = 100 pixels
resolution 300 px / inch
The symbol is at 11.32%.

What other information is needed?

I was expecting a more wysiwyg placement of the symbol so is that wrong?

Thanks!

Not sure what size those symbols are originally (in pixels), but 11% is tiny. When you shrink down a non-vector image, it loses information. In this case, it loses pixels. It's sort of like this - imagine you have an image made up of four pixels, each a different color. Then you reduce it's size in half, down to two pixels. Well, it can't show all four colors now, so two will get ditched. That's an extreme example, but when you take an image that's supposed to be displayed at 100% resolution and reduce it down to 11%, a lot of pixels will get lost. The result is something blurry.

If your assets are available as vector graphics, you can avoid this problem.

Thanks for the replies!

Yeah, I think that's the issue, raster images? Or rather png files?

Okay, I just need to learn how to scale it up now!

Thanks!

What you also could do: Use your assets at 100% and scale the landmasses up.

Also, are you zoomed in that screenshot? Right now Other World Mapper uses a "bitmap" zoom when viewing the map so you will see pixelation as you zoom in.

Map is wysiwyg at 100% zoom, but you will see pixelation as noted above when zooming in/out, though you can export scaled up or down without this issue for everything that is vector based (and even the png symbols will look decent since the scale export runs a better algorithm than the on screen zoom).

Thank you!

I think people were right that the small symbol, 11%, is what caused the blurriness. The symbol is just HUGE at 100% and I don't want that. However, I then made a zoomed in version of those maps and was able to use the symbol at a higher percentage and it looks better in my zoomed in map.

Thanks!
