Labels can only be black

I've tried creating a few labels.
I tried changing the color to yellow before and after typing the text.
I tried selecting the text and changing the color. (note: changing the font size worked, but not the color).
The color does show up in the tool window, but the text in the map is always black.
Reselecting the text after the fact, the color in the tool is always black again.
v1.0.2 on Ubuntu 18.04
