How do you work out a "backer number"?

I've seen a couple of people say they were backer number X or Y.

I think that Kickstarter might have told me my backer number when I initially signed up, but I can't remember it.

How are they working this out? They don't seem to be counting up or down on the list of backers on the Kickstarter.

I can only speak for myself.

I had been chatting with Stephanie via PM before I decided to back, and I have her message saying I bumped them over the 30 threshold. Otherwise I wouldn’t have remembered.

Good question, I know I was an early backer but my position on the backers list at Kickstarter seems to jive more with my change from Beta to Alpha.

I didn't cancel and then back Alpha I just changed my level. I wonder if that moves your backer number around.

Any enlightenment available for us on this?

You can find your "backer number" through your backer history page.

Login to kickstarter.
Click on "Me" in the top right corner.
Click on Backer History.

Find the project that you want to know your "backer number" and click on it.

The displayed summary will show your backer number near the center.

And really #2 if you don't take into consideration the backers who had seen/reviewed our campaign before it went live :).
(and our first Beta/Alpha backer).

Needless to say, we were very happy to see you back us during that slow begining!! Thank you! :D

That is an interesting question. I changed my pledge two times.

I started off with "PAY 1 USD AND PESTER THE OWM TEAM WITH A TON OF QUESTIONS" level. :P

Then I switched to "HEY THEY ARE ACTUALLY NEAR TO FUNDING MAC OS, LETS WAIT UNTIL THEY ARE WITHIN 49 USD OF THE TARGET AND UP MY PLEDGE - BLAST I MISSED IT" level.

Finally I switched to the "LETS GET MY FRIEND TO MAKE COOL MAPS FOR ME" level. ;)

Thanks Vegitation. That's really helpful.

EDIT: Turns out I am Backer #140.

As long as you don't cancel your pledge, your backer number will stay the same.

This is good information... I've backed thirty-four different projects, you'd think I'd have figured this out by now. Thanks for the info!
