Best Place to Post Images (to Link here)

Sometimes a picture is worth a 1,000 words especially when demo-ing maps and such.

What do you recommend for a place to store images to link here?

There's a place to add attachments below? Is that the best place? Is there a size limit?

Seems like a place to post samples would start some conversation here.

Most of us have been posting images on OWM's Facebook page.

Thanks!!!

I'm not a Facey Book person (too much potential for abuse). I guess I can lurk a bit.

Speaking of abuse, I found the Reddit spot on map making as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/mapmaking

And, of course the Cartographer's Guild: https://www.cartographersguild.com/content.php

The information is there but the it takes some digging.

Facebook (we have a FB group too) and twitter are good, but we want to get the forum more lively as you suggested. We've been building a dedicated server which we are hoping to move our forums to so there is enough space for uploading big maps.

You can attach maps to our posts, but the limit right now is 1MB. You can also link to free image hosting accounts.

Looking forward to seeing your work! :)

Easy enough to screen grab if needed. Part of the technical skill of making maps, it seems, is how to control the size and scaling. A good artist can select colors and blends to make it work. Those of us that are not artists need some help.

I haven't seen a good site with styles shown (ancient, fantasy, medieval, classic blue and white maps, hex maps, isometrics, battle maps etc.) There are a lot of great examples but the content is very scattered. (Or so it seems to me.)

A lot of the map sites focus more on how they made Photoshop, GIMP, or Illustrator do what they show. In theory in OWM, that is not needed. It handles those details for the user. There are some OWM details to make it do those things but compared to Photoshop or GIMP, much less.

The basics of map making and geography are easy enough to cover and critical to make maps make sense.

And, of course, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I played with the export a bit on my test map.

What was 12 MB as a PNG, shrunk to 1.2 MB with JPG and ~300KB with some compression.

The JPG actually looked a little better. One of the fonts I picked was a bit busy. Still need to play with that.

Still having trouble making the rivers go exactly where I want them. I'll have to play with that a bit more.
