I have a hand-drawn map from years ago that I really want to be able to use with OWM, but I can't figure out how to get an import to work. Any ideas how I can redraw my landmass and political borders without messing them up too much?

Hello!

If you want to "trace" the map image with our tools, you can set it as the canvas "background image," in the canvas properties window.
